Fossils learning program

The Fossil Chamber in the Victoria Fossil Cave is the largest site in the park. The study of fossils gives us a unique window on the climate, vegetation and environment at the time when these animals lived, as well as a better understanding of the evolution of Australian fauna.

Students will spend time at the largest of the fossil deposits, discussing the accumulation of bones in the caves, excavation techniques, current research, and World Heritage features. The students will work with hands-on examples of what is discussed, and analyse two complete megafauna skeletons.

The program also includes a guided visit to the Wonambi Fossil Centre, which offers a glimpse of what ancient Naracoorte may have been like when megafauna roamed the bush.

The program can be tailored to suit the student age group.
